Iolite takes its name from the word 'ios' which is the Greek word for violet. Iolite has found fame in the gemstone world because of its vibrant color and occasional cat's-eye effect. It is thought that Iolite was also used as a mariners navigational stone as it could be used to filter the sky and the position of the sun could be determined.
