Agate is a translucent variety of microcrystalline quartz. Known as a stone of protection, the ancient Egyptians and Persians believed that agates could be used to protect the wearer. It was also believed to counteract the Evil Eye, and have therefore, since biblical times, been worn and used in jewelry to protect one from malevolent powers, imminent storms, nightmares, stress, and fatigue.
Today, agates are cut into cabochons, beads, small sculptures, and functional objects such as paperweights and bookends. Agate cabochons are popular and used in rings, earrings, pendants, and other jewelry objects, while agate beads are commonly made into necklaces and earrings.
Moss Agate Beads
While moss agate appears to have inclusions of fresh green moss in the stone, the mossy patterns are actually metal inclusions in the stone - not plant matter.
Moss agate gemstones have a semi-translucent appearance. They boast a range of colors - from deep forest green to light gray. Once they have been polished, they have a smooth, though rough-looking surface. This earthy forest green gemstone’s sizes, shapes, tone, texture, and colors may vary with handcrafted items. It can be used as a fabulous supporting bead or can stand as a statement piece in its own right.
Fire Agate Beads
Fire agate beads, a unique variety of agate stone beads, boast a fiery orange base and unique, creamy-white mottling (streaks and patches of natural white color). The veins of white against the rich orange tone create a web-like appearance. They can be used as a central element or to support other beads when designing beaded jewelry. Their striking appearance makes them an excellent choice to create stunning brooches, bracelets, rings or necklaces.
